That means the long-rumored Apple folding phone is no longer a future product. It has a name, a price, finished hardware, and a real ship date.

The iPhone Fold price also has a final number. The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the U.S. with 256GB of storage. Apple also offers 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB configurations.
That is expensive even by flagship-phone standards, and the extra money is primarily paying for the folding hardware and the large inner display. It is not paying for Apple's best camera system.

What Is the iPhone Duo?
Think of the iPhone Duo as an iPhone that opens into something closer to a small tablet.
Closed, the 5.4-inch outer display gives you a conventional one-handed phone. Open it and the inside becomes a 7.6-inch canvas. Apple built iOS 27.1 around that wider space, so the point is not simply to make every app bigger.
You can run two apps side by side with Split View, save app pairs, open two windows of the same app, use Apple Pencil with USB-C, prop the phone open on a surface, and move between the outer and inner screens without treating them like two unrelated devices.
That is why I would not describe the Duo as an iPhone 18 Pro with a hinge. It is a different category between a phone and a small tablet.
The iPhone Fold Screen Is the Real Reason to Buy It
The iPhone Fold screen is the headline feature. The outer display measures 5.4 inches and supports ProMotion, Always-On, and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness. Open the phone and you get a 7.6-inch inner OLED display with the same peak outdoor brightness and adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz.
The inner display also has a nano-texture finish designed to reduce reflections and make the crease less visible. Apple Pencil with USB-C support is coming later this year and works on both screens.
For reviewing photographs on location, answering email, checking documents, watching video, or showing work to a client, that 7.6-inch display is the Duo feature I find most convincing. It is a much larger workspace that can still disappear into a pocket.
If I bought this phone, the screen would be the reason. Everything else is supporting hardware.
Is the iPhone Duo an Apple Flip Phone?
Not in the usual sense. A lot of people search Apple flip phone, flip phone iPhone, or iPhone flip because those phrases are familiar, but the iPhone Duo does not fold vertically like a classic clamshell.
It is a book-style foldable. The hinge runs vertically and the phone opens sideways into the larger 7.6-inch display. Foldable iPhone or folding iPhone describes the hardware more accurately than flip phone.
iPhone Fold Camera: Two 48MP Rear Cameras
The iPhone Fold camera system, now officially the iPhone Duo camera system, uses two rear cameras.
The 48MP Fusion Main is a 26mm camera with an f/1.6 aperture and sensor-shift optical image stabilization. It shoots 24MP by default, can capture at 48MP, and produces a 12MP optical-quality 2x view at 52mm by cropping the main sensor.
The second lens is a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide at 13mm, f/2.2, with a 120-degree field of view. It also handles 48MP macro photography.
There is no dedicated telephoto lens. That is the biggest camera omission on the Duo, especially at $1,999. If you care about reach, portraits from farther away, sports, stage work, or long-lens compression, this is where the cheaper iPhone 18 Pro separates itself.
The Folding Design Gives the Camera New Tricks
The Duo does not have Apple's most complete lens system, but the fold itself creates camera features a normal iPhone cannot copy.
- Rear-camera selfies: use the higher-resolution rear cameras while framing yourself on the outer display.
- Duo Preview: show the person you are photographing a live preview on the outside screen.
- Smart Take: on-device AI can capture a frame automatically when people are posing.
- Kid Cue: animations appear on the outer display to help get a child's attention toward the camera.
- Built-in stand: partially fold the phone and set it down for hands-free video, time-lapse, or FaceTime.
Duo Preview is the feature I would probably use most. Anyone who photographs people knows that showing a nervous subject what the frame looks like can make direction easier. The outer screen turns that into a built-in part of the camera.
For pure image-making ability, I still prefer the Pro camera system. For unusual ways to physically use the phone while shooting, the Duo is more interesting.
iPhone Duo Video Is Better Than a Typical Foldable
The Duo records 4K Dolby Vision at up to 120 fps on the Fusion Main camera. It also supports Cinematic mode up to 4K Dolby Vision at 60 fps, macro video, Dual Capture, 4K Dolby Vision time-lapse, Audio Mix, and spatial audio recording.
The folding body adds one practical advantage: you can prop the phone up without carrying a tripod. For social content, calls, time-lapse, and quick locked-off shots, that is useful.

iPhone Duo Uses A20 Pro
The foldable iPhone runs A20 Pro, the same chip family used in the iPhone 18 Pro models. It has a 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU, Dual 16-core Neural Engine, and a new thermal system built around a custom vapor chamber.
Apple rates sustained performance up to 35 percent higher than the iPhone 17 Pro. The more interesting part here is not benchmark speed. It is giving the phone enough sustained performance to drive two displays, Split View, gaming, and on-device AI without the larger format becoming a liability.
iPhone Duo Battery Life Depends on Which Screen You Use
A foldable phone makes one battery number misleading, so Apple publishes several.
- Typical mixed use: up to 24 hours
- Video playback on outer display: up to 44 hours
- Video playback on inner display: up to 31 hours
- 50 percent wired charge: around 20 minutes with a 60W-capable adapter or higher
- 50 percent wireless charge: around 30 minutes with the required MagSafe setup
The mixed-use figure is the one I would plan around. A 7.6-inch OLED running beside a smaller outer display changes battery expectations depending on how you actually use the device.
Touch ID Is Back on the Foldable iPhone
The iPhone Duo does not use Face ID. Apple put Touch ID into the side button instead.
That choice makes sense on hardware that can be open, closed, standing up, or sitting at an angle. The fingerprint sensor stays in the same physical control regardless of how the displays are positioned.
It is still notable that Apple's $1,999 iPhone uses Touch ID while the Pro models keep Face ID. That is another reminder that the Duo is not simply the most expensive version of the normal iPhone. It is its own branch of the lineup.
Should You Buy the New iPhone Fold?
I would buy the iPhone Duo for one reason: I wanted the screen.
If you spend a lot of time reading, answering email, reviewing photographs, working in documents, watching video, using two apps at once, or wishing your phone could occasionally behave like a small tablet, this is the most interesting iPhone Apple has made in years.
If your priority is photography or professional video, I would buy the iPhone 18 Pro instead. It costs less and gives you the stronger camera system.
That sounds backward until you stop treating the Duo as the new top-end Pro model. Apple built a different kind of iPhone. The screen is the product.
