Insta360 Luna Ultra: Complete Features, Camera Specs and What It Does

Ian JonesOctober 16, 202612 min read

The Insta360 Luna Ultra is a compact handheld 8K camera with two Leica-co-engineered lenses, a built-in three-axis gimbal and a detachable wireless OLED monitor. Released June 10, 2026, it brings wide-angle and telephoto shooting, high-frame-rate video, subject tracking, low-light recording and professional color controls into one portable camera. This is a breakdown of its published features and specifications, not a hands-on review.

I work in commercial videography and product photography, so I tend to look at a camera by the actual recording modes, optics and workflow options it offers. Here is what the Luna Ultra does, what each major feature means and where the limitations are.

The Luna Ultra combines a 1-inch, 20mm-equivalent f/1.8 main camera with a 1/1.3-inch, 60mm-equivalent f/2.0 telephoto camera. It supports up to 8K30 video, 4K120 slow motion, 1080p240, 10-bit I-Log, up to 15× zoom in compatible modes, a detachable 2-inch OLED screen and 47GB of usable internal storage. Lens, zoom and frame-rate availability vary by recording mode.

What is the Insta360 Luna Ultra?

The Luna Ultra is a pocket-sized gimbal camera in Insta360’s Luna series. Instead of a larger interchangeable-lens body mounted on a separate stabilizer, the camera and three-axis mechanical gimbal form one handheld unit. It is meant for travel, vlogging, portraits, everyday video, social content and more controlled filmmaking.

Its two fixed-lens cameras provide different perspectives. The main lens is for wide compositions and general video. The telephoto is for tighter framing, portraits, distant subjects and detail shots. It is not a 360-degree video camera like the Insta360 X-series.

Dual Leica lenses and image sensors

Camera hardware
Main camera1-inch sensor; approximately 50MP sensor; 20mm equivalent; f/1.8
Telephoto camera1/1.3-inch sensor; 60mm equivalent; f/2.0
Main minimum focus9cm / 3.54in
Telephoto minimum focus15cm / 5.91in
Aperture controlFixed apertures, not variable
Optical designLeica-co-engineered Summicron optics

The main camera provides a wide field of view that suits walking shots, interiors, landscapes and scenes where the surrounding environment matters. The dedicated 60mm-equivalent telephoto provides a tighter perspective without requiring a separate interchangeable lens.

The two focal lengths also make the camera more flexible for portraits and close-up product details. Telephoto Macro mode is designed for capturing textures and small subjects while benefiting from gimbal stabilization. The exact result still depends on available light, focusing distance and the selected zoom setting.

Video recording resolutions and slow motion

The main recording options include 8K at up to 30 frames per second, 4K at up to 120fps and 1080p at up to 240fps. Insta360 offers standard video, dedicated slow motion, portrait-oriented modes and low-light PureVideo recording.

Video formats and maximum frame rates
8K 16:97680 × 4320, up to 30fps
8K 2.35:17680 × 3264, up to 30fps
4K 16:93840 × 2160, up to 120fps
4K 2.35:13840 × 1632, up to 120fps

3K square 1:13072 × 3072, up to 60fps
3K vertical 9:161728 × 3072, up to 60fps
2.7K landscape2688 × 1520, up to 120fps
2.7K vertical1520 × 2688, up to 60fps
1080p landscape1920 × 1080, up to 240fps
1080p vertical1080 × 1920, up to 60fps
PureVideo low lightUp to 4K60 in 16:9
Dedicated Slow-Mo4K120 / 4K100; 1080p240 / 1080p200

At a 30fps playback speed, 4K120 can be slowed to one-quarter speed and 1080p240 to one-eighth speed. The ability to capture 8K is useful when high-resolution delivery or reframing matters; 4K120 and 1080p240 prioritize movement over maximum resolution.

Some modes limit zoom and lens switching. For example, at 4K120, the Ultra supports 1× and 3× positions but not continuous zoom during recording. Its vertical 4K mode tops out at 30fps. These are important differences from the headline maximum specifications.

Zoom: 1× through 15× and a dedicated telephoto

The Luna Ultra has two physical optical focal lengths: 20mm and 60mm equivalents. Insta360 now specifies up to 15× zoom for supported photo and video modes, corresponding to an advertised 300mm-equivalent view. Up to 6× is described as lossless by Insta360, with different sensor crops used at specific zoom steps.

Zoom levels explained
1× / 20mmNative wide camera
2× / 40mmLossless sensor crop from the main camera
3× / 60mmNative telephoto camera
6× / 120mmLossless crop from the telephoto camera
6.1× to 15×Digital crop with image-quality loss
Optional Ultra Telephoto LensUp to 450mm-equivalent stage capture with processing

A key distinction: the camera does not have a continuously moving 15× optical zoom lens. Zoom levels between the native and lossless points rely on cropping, and the longest settings can visibly trade detail for reach. The 15× setting also does not work in every recording mode.

At launch, some Insta360 materials described 12× maximum zoom. The current official product page and support documentation list up to 15×. This article uses those updated specifications.

10-bit I-Log, Dolby Vision and Leica color profiles

  • 10-bit I-Log recording for more flexible color grading than a basic baked-in profile.
  • Dolby Vision HDR video for an HDR-focused capture and playback workflow.
  • Leica Natural, Leica Vivid and Leica Chrome color options, plus additional creative film looks.
  • ACES color-workflow support and a documented DaVinci Resolve I-Log workflow.
  • QR Color Share for sharing compatible color settings between devices.
  • ISO 100 to 6400 and adjustable white balance from 2000K to 10000K.

Insta360 advertises up to 14 stops of dynamic range. That is a manufacturer-stated figure rather than a measured guarantee in every shooting mode. The camera uses H.265 video in MP4 files, with a maximum published video bitrate of 150Mbps. For creators who edit and grade their work, those codec and bitrate details matter as much as the 8K label.

For another look at practical color work, I have also written about color grading footage from different cameras.

Triple AI chip and low-light PureVideo

A three-chip processing system combines two dedicated imaging chips and a 4nm AI processor. PureVideo mode uses image processing for brighter, cleaner low-light footage and supports up to 4K60 in landscape. The camera also offers automatic scene-based white balance and processing intended to reduce flicker under artificial lighting.

PureVideo is a separate capture mode rather than a promise that every 8K frame receives the same processing. Low light also still affects exposure, detail and motion blur, especially with fast-moving subjects.

Three-axis gimbal stabilization and smart tracking

The Luna Ultra contains a three-axis mechanical gimbal for pan, tilt and roll stabilization. This helps the camera remain level during handheld walking shots and deliberate moving compositions. A physical gimbal is especially useful when filming while moving, since it controls the direction of the camera rather than relying on software cropping alone.

  • Deep Track 5.0: select a subject to have the camera follow it.
  • Auto Tracking: keeps a selected subject framed during movement.
  • Active Zoom Tracking: follows subjects while using supported tighter framing.
  • Group Tracking: attempts to keep multiple people in the shot.
  • Smart Framing: positions the subject at a chosen point in the frame rather than forcing dead center.
  • Rapid Focus: Insta360’s focusing system for shifting subjects and compositions.
  • Joystick control and preset gimbal movements for manual framing.

Tracking and autofocus are useful for filming alone, although performance can vary when people and foreground objects compete for attention. A gimbal does not eliminate motion blur or guarantee perfect focus.

Detachable wireless OLED monitor

Detachable screen
Type2-inch OLED touchscreen
Resolution318 × 564 pixels
Brightness1,000 nits
Refresh rate60Hz
Advertised remote transmissionUp to 20 meters in open test conditions
Remote battery210mAh
Built-in microphoneYes, on the detachable screen

The monitor can detach so the operator can view and control the camera from a distance. It is useful when the camera sits on a tripod, points toward the person filming, or is mounted somewhere that makes the onboard screen difficult to see. The monitor can also rotate to enable portrait-oriented shooting.

The manufacturer’s 20-meter distance is an ideal-condition claim. Walls, wireless interference and placement can shorten practical range.

Battery life and fast charging

Power and charging
Camera battery1,550mAh
Advertised battery lifeUp to 240 minutes / 4 hours
80% chargeApproximately 23 minutes
Full chargeApproximately 38 minutes
Fast-charge setupCompatible 45W USB-C PD 3.0 PPS charger
Battery handleOptional accessory for extended shooting

The four-hour battery test was performed at 1080p24 with Wi-Fi and the screen switched off at 25°C. Recording 8K or 4K120, using the remote display and tracking subjects can shorten runtime. Charging times are also measured under controlled conditions with the camera off.

Internal storage, microSD cards and files

  • 47GB of usable built-in storage.
  • Supports compatible SanDisk and Lexar microSD cards up to 2TB according to current hardware documentation.
  • USB-C 3.0 for wired file transfers.
  • MP4 video with H.265 encoding.
  • JPEG and JPEG + RAW still photography.
  • Up to 150Mbps maximum published video bitrate.

For an estimate, 47GB stores roughly 42 minutes at a continuous 150Mbps before storage overhead. Actual available recording time changes with the recording format and selected bitrate. Fast, compatible cards and sufficient editing storage are worth factoring into a high-resolution workflow.

Microphones and wireless audio

The Luna Ultra has four microphones in total, including one in the detachable screen. Built-in options include Wind Reduction, Voice Enhancement and Original Audio. Stage Mode additionally offers Stage Audio and Ambient Audio, meant to emphasize a performance or the surrounding atmosphere.

It can work with supported Insta360 wireless microphone accessories for cleaner dialogue and two-person recording. The support specifications describe internal AAC audio as 48kHz, 32-bit; this should not be assumed equivalent to external 32-bit-float audio recording.

Photography and creative shooting modes

  • 37MP UltraPhoto for detailed still photographs.
  • JPEG + RAW shooting for post-production flexibility.
  • 200MP Scenic Panorama for stitched, wide scenic stills.
  • Live Photos and Live Frame options that combine still imagery with movement.
  • Portrait Video up to 4K60 with optional adjustable beauty effects.
  • Stage Mode for concerts, theater and distant performers, with special telephoto and audio tools.
  • Telephoto Macro for closer details and textures.
  • 4K vertical video at 30fps for social media, plus other 9:16 and square modes.
  • Timelapse for interval-based scenes.
  • TimeShift for accelerated footage.
  • Barrel Roll / Shot Lab effects for rotating camera movements.
  • AI-powered editing through the Insta360 app.

The 200MP panorama is a stitched still-photography mode, not 200MP video and not immersive 360-degree video. Likewise, its Live Photo capability is distinct from recording standard video. The Ultra is built around conventional forward-facing filming.

Who is the Luna Ultra designed for?

The feature set is best suited to people wanting stabilized footage without a full camera rig: travel creators, solo presenters, vloggers, behind-the-scenes shooters and filmmakers who value both wide and telephoto compositions. It also has practical applications in documenting products, places and demonstrations where a lightweight camera makes shooting easier.

Compared with an interchangeable-lens camera, the trade-offs include fixed apertures, limited lens choices and a smaller overall professional accessory ecosystem. Against a rugged action camera, its mechanical gimbal, dual lenses and remote display are advantages, while the lack of water and dust resistance is a disadvantage.
